Colias erate (Esper, [1805])
Range: SE Europe (expanding westward in recent decades), the steppe and forest-steppe zones of Asia, E Africa.
Distribution in Bulgaria: Mainly in the lowlands, but occasionally strays or migrants can be seen even at high altitudes.
Habitat: Along the Black Sea coast diverse grassy and/or bushy places, inland typically alfalfa fields.
Bionomics: Three, perhaps more, generations from April till October. Larval host-plants: alfalfa (Medicago sativa, Fabaceae) (Tolman & Lewington 1997).
Conservation status: Not threatened. IUCN category: Lower risk, least concern.
