Erebia aethiops (Esper, [1777])
Range: Eurasia from France to Turkey and W Siberia.
Distribution in Bulgaria: Mountain woodland from 900 to ca. 2100 m; so far recorded from Stara Planina, Vitosha, Rila, Pirin, Osogovo and W Rhodopi. Recorded from up to 2600 m, but probably this is due to confusion with the somewhat similar, but more high-altitude species Erebia pronoe.
Habitat: Forest roads, glades, clearings, wooded river and stream valleys in the mixed and coniferous forest zones.
Bionomics: One generation from July till August. Larval host-plants: grasses (Poaceae) (Tolman & Lewington 1997).
Conservation status: Local but, in my opinion, in reality widespread in the mixed and coniferous forest zones of Bulgarian mountains. IUCN category: Lower risk, least concern.
