Hipparchia ferula (Fabricius, 1793)
Name in Tolman & Lewington (1997): Satyrus ferula

Systematics: In older Bulgarian sources referred to as actaea. Hipparchia actaea (Esper, 1780) is a separate species occurring only in SW Europe.

Range: N Africa, S Europe, W and C Asia to China.

Distribution in Bulgaria: The largest populations are in the karst regions of Alibotush, Pirin and W Rhodopi as well as Stara Planina near Sliven (personal observations). Recorded also from Plovdiv, W Rila (the valley of Rilska river), Dupnitsa, Karlovo, Strandzha and NE Bulgaria. From 200 to ca. 1800 m a.s.l.

Habitat: Dry warm grassy, bushy and rocky places in or along oak forests; rocky mountain slopes.

Bionomics: One generation from June till August. Larval host-plant: Festuca ovina (Poaceae) (Tolman & Lewington 1997).

Conservation status: With limited range in Bulgaria and generally not numerous; needs research. IUCN category: Data Deficient, possibly Vulnerable.
