Hipparchia volgensis (Mazochin-Porshnjakov, 1952)

Systematics: See Hipparchia senthes. The taxon volgensis is considered by some authors a subspecies or synonym of Hipparchia pellucida Stauder, 1924, found from the E-Aegean islands and Turkey to Caucasus and Crimea.

Range: Endemic to SE Europe, occurs in the Balkan Peninsula, Romania and the steppes of Ukraine, Russia-in-Europe and W Kazakstan.

Distribution in Bulgaria: Local in the hottest regions mainly S of Stara Planina: environs of Sliven, the Black Sea coast N to Varna, Rhodopi, Vitosha (Dragalevski monastery), Rila, Struma valley N to Kresna gorge (Abadjiev 2001; personal observations). From sea level to ca. 1700 m (personal observations).

Habitat: Dry, warm bushy sandy, stony and/or rocky places in or near deciduous or coniferous woodland; sunny rocky slopes.

Bionomics: One generation from June till August. Larval host-plants: unknown, apparently grasses (Poaceae).

Conservation status: The distribution and status of this poorly known species with very limited total range require further research in Bulgaria. IUCN category: Data Deficient.
