Pyrgus andromedae (Wallengren, 1853)

Range: Arcto-alpine, endemic to Europe. Occurs in polar and montane Fennoscandia, polar Ural, the Pyrenees, Alps, Romanian and Ukrainian Carpathians and the Balkan Peninsula in former Yugoslavia and Bulgaria.

Distribution in Bulgaria: Only very recently confirmed for the country, known from several specimens collected by Z. Varga and Al. Slivov from the marble part of N Pirin above 1900 m a.s.l. (Abadjiev 2001, Kolev 2002a).

Habitat: Stony, grassy alpine slopes.

Bionomics: One generation; Bulgarian records come from late July and early August.Larval host-plant: Potentilla (Rosaceae) (Tolman & Lewington 1997).

Conservation status: A local and apparently rare species with a very restricted Bulgarian as well as total range. IUCN category: Vulnerable. Its inclusion into the Red Data Book of Bulgaria is herewith recommended.
